Module 3: Empowering Students' learning with Digital Portfolios.

In this module we've learnt what's a portfolio and how to use it in the classroom.

      1-Digital portfolios
With the outbreak of the digital revolution, portfolios became eportfolios, e-portfolios or digital portfolios. Now all the digital artefacts for learning are collected online and new tools help learners leverage all the potential of technology to learn and keep track of their learning in the cloud.

2-How do you create a digital portfolio?
  • Collect. Keep track of all the learning artifacts you create: Texts, audio recordings, videos, projects, posters, images, presentations…
  • Select. Which ones represent the best evidence of your learning? If we are evaluating oral competence, for instance, which evidence showcases your best example?
  • Reflect. What have you done well, according to your evidence? What do you need to work on
further? It is vital to present some reflection to support your selected evidence with some criteria.
  • Share. Learning is sharing too. To share online, you can use a blog, a webpage like google site, an infographic, a digital magazine, videos etc.

    3-Types of portfolio
Although each portfolio is unique according to the purpose of creation, we can generally talk about two types of portfolios.
    • Portfolio As Workspace. This refers to a work in progress, an on-going collection that is regularly updated with new learning items over a period of time. This portfolio aims to assess the PROCESS OF LEARNING. The audience is often private, often teacher and peers and assessment is basically geared at learning further. A document of reflection on the different learning productions help students know on what to focus next.
    • Portfolio As Showcase. This refers to celebrating the achievement of learning. After a selection of the best items to show a given competence that needs to be assessed, it focusses on the PRODUCT OF LEARNING. The audience is often public, on social networks like linked in, your employers, a panel of evaluation etc. A document of a brief presentation of the portfolio selections gives the audience a rationale of the collection.
